Expressing cloisonné enamel… outside the frame.
Cloisonné enamel is a decorative technique that consists of creating patterns or images by hand defining partitions of gold wire inside which coloured enamel powder is deposited. Once exposed to high temperatures, the enamel melts and vitrifies. The piece is then sanded to obtain a smooth and shiny finish.
The artist decided to explore the artistic theme of “contrast”. In this disruptive work, he creates a dialogue between two artists who are at odds with each other.
Vasily Kandinsky (1866-1944) is one of the pioneers of abstract art: for him, art was an emotional and spiritual experience that was free from figurative representation; Francesco Hayez (1791-1882) is an Italian painter of the Romantic movement: his works often depicted historical, mythological and literary scenes.
Once the works are chosen, the next step is quite challenging: Matteo Stauffacher merges the softness and intimacy evoked by Hayez’s “The Kiss” with the brightly coloured geometric shapes of Kandinsky’s “Transverse Line”.
